Bio-hazardous samples in the Mini Spray Dryer

I want to spray biologically hazardous samples. How can I effectively protect myself and the environment?
The system has to be installed in a fume hood. To eliminate any possible contamination during operation, the front window is closed and the system is run with the Remote Control Panel. A sterile filter (e.g. from PALL, please ask for further specification) eliminates any outlet of hazardous samples.

Collecting vessel

I want to spray a lot of a product. Is a bigger collecting vessel available?
Yes, we have made a 1,5 litre collection vessel with beaker flask connection.

Cyclone

I would like to spray a very expensive product , which opportunity do I have?
For this purpose, BUCHI is offering a smaller high-performance cyclone. Small samples as little as 20 ml can be processed with a high recovery rate.

Dichloromethane

Is it possible to spray with Dichloromethane as solvent?
Yes it is, with the Inert Loop B-295 at -20°C it is possible to condense approx. 70% of the solvent. An additional Cold Trap in the exhaust tube is recommended to increase the recovery rate.

Filter material

Which filter material shall I normally use?
If the filter is only needed to clean the exhaust air, we recommend the deep-filter in Polyester. This filter has a very good separation rate and is relatively cheap. For all others, who are interested in a certain recovery from the filter, the PTFE membrane type is the right choice.

Glass breakage of Cylinder

During cleaning of the cylinder, the glass part may break. How can I prevent this?
We recommend to put a little piece of rubber tube around the outlet connection of the separation vessel. This dampens possible hits and thus glass breakage can be limited.

Glass Compatibility

Can I use my old glass parts of the B-191?
The cyclone with the glass elbow and also the separation flask remain the same. The cylinder is not compatible.

Nozzle Compatibility

Is the new nozzle also compatible for the B-191?
Yes, the new nozzle is compatible even its length is bigger. So for an exchange of nozzles, the new nozzle is recommended. Please contact your local sales representative with order code 44698.

Organic solvents

Do we have the possibility to spray with organic solvents?
Yes, with the Mini Spray Dryer B-290 and the Inert Loop B-295 it is possible to spray with organic solvents without risk of explosion, because the system works under inert condition.

The Mini Spray Dryer B-191 is designed for aqueous solutions only. If flammable solvents are used, it can cause an explosive mixture. Therefore, BUCHI neglects any responsibility if organic solvents are used.

Outlet Temperature

The Outlet Temperature drops during the Spray Drying Process. What is the matter?
A typical reason is that the outlet filter is blocked. Therefore, the air volume is lower and thus the energy limited, leading to a lower outlet temperature.

Particle size

What is the range of the particle size?
The range of particle size goes from 0.5 to 30 micrometer. The lower limitation is given by the separation of the cyclone: smaller particles can not be separated anymore and are going into the filter.

Plastic+Glass

Can I order the glass assembly in PLASTIC+GLASS ?
Of course, this can be made as a special version. The temperature of the inlet gas stream is limited to 120°C.

Spray cylinders

If I change the glass cylinder, how does it affect the spray drying results?
With the vertical outlet cylinder, the heat losses are a little smaller what leads to a higher outlet temperature. Therefore, pump rate can be increased to obtain the same conditions compared to the other cylinder.
