Collecting even smallest particles and highest yields

BUCHI Labortechnik offers a lab-bench Spray Dryer with glass cyclone and electrically conductive layer to prevent product losses in the cyclone. The near-mesh grain directly correlates with the diameter of the cyclone: a smaller dimension leads to a better separation of smaller particles. Based on general proportions described in literature and the manufacturing possibilities of the glass blower’s knowledge, a new type of cyclone has been developed and optimised. Furthermore, the product collection vessel was downscaled for small quantities and easy handling.

Easy Handling of Glass assembly

The glassware has to be cleaned after every trial, so an easy assembly and dissassembly is of crucial importance. With the one lever attachment of the spray cylinder, it is particularly easy to install the glass.

The inner wall of the cyclone is coated with an electrically conductive layer to prevent any electrostatic charge of the product.

automatic online nozzle cleaning

The nozzle has an integrated piston with cleaning needle to be pushed through the nozzle in case of clogging. The frequency can be selected between 2 and 30 seconds. Furthermore, a manual push-button enables the cleaning at any time.

Nozzle cooling

The nozzle can be cooled with regular tap water. The water is supplied to the tip of the nozzle and flows in counter-current to the product. So the coldest water contacts the product at the latest possible point of the nozzle.

Spraying of heat sensitive product is possible.

Spray Drying of organic solvents

At last it is possible to safely carry out laboratory scale spray drying of organic solvents – by using the accessory Inert Loop B-295!

Previously, spray drying of inflammable solvents was associated with the risk of explosion and was consequently prohibited. However, important new areas of research and applications necessitate the use of spray drying from an organic solvent base. To be able to respond to this challenge a new type of accessory has been developed which allows the user to work safely with almost all currently available solvents!

Mini Spray Dryer B-290 acid resistant

The acid resistant Mini Spray Dryer B-290 version is made to spray dry acid solutions in open mode configuration. It comprises a highly effective perfluoroalkoxy polymer coating (PFA) on the metallic parts of the spray dryer which are in contact with the product and drying gas. The coating prevents corrosion and results a good quality similar to polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).

Areas of application

     • Materials science and chemical industries working with acids

     • Spray drying of corrosive salt solutions

     • Solidifying of metals for catalyst applications in ceramics industry

     • Processing of hydrocarbons

     • Development of new materials for electronic applications

Decontamination and disinfection in place

Safety is an important aspect in every day routine in the laboratory. The operation with active pharmaceutical ingredients (API’s), micro-organisms and chemical substances in powder form needs special precautions due to possible danger of inhalation of small particles.

The Decontamination and Disinfectant Glassware consists of a modified spray cylinder, separator, particle collection vessel and washing tubing with all valves included. After Spray drying, the particle collection vessel and the separator are replaced by glassware with drain tubing connections. A feed tubing with a dispersion head is inserted into the spray cylinder using a special opening. By pumping disinfectant solution, water or organic solvent through the feed tubing, the inner glass wall is washed down and agglomerated particles are bound in liquid form.

This system is also expandable by a Sterile Filter from PALL to make sure that no potentially dangerous material is leaving the spray drying system. Please contact your sales correspondent for more information.

Conditioned inlet air or cooled inlet air

Usually the drying gas is ambient air which has varying humidity. Different climatic effects such as temperature, season and weather strongly influence the level of humidity. Therefore, constant and reproducible results are difficult to achieve.

An efficient way to obtain constant parameters is by conditioning the inlet air.

BUCHI has developed the Dehumidifier B-296 for use with their lab-scale spray dryer. By incorporating a refrigeration unit, the inlet air is cooled down to 2-5°C. The humidity is condensed and dry air independent of the ambient humidity is generated for the spray drying process.

If spray drying is to be performed with oxygen-sensitive substances, operation under nitrogen is the typical approach. Nitrogen is also used when working with inflammable solvents. To minimise nitrogen consumption, the Dehumidifier B-296 is the right choice. Nitrogen is circulated in a closed loop and evaporated solvent is condensed in the Dehumidifier. The cleaned nitrogen is re-used in the spray dryer. Having a heat exchanger in-between significantly increases efficiency and enables operation, even at high temperatures, with condensation temperatures at below 6°C. When working with mixtures of water and organic solvents (max. 40% concentration), this system of working in closed mode is a suitable method.
